Sarawak firms urged to take opportunities from National OGSE Blueprint

Oil and gas services and equipment (OGSE) companies in Sarawak should take opportunities generated under the National OGSE Industry Blueprint 2021-2030 initiative to offer higher value and sustainable products, State Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said.

He said 88 per cent of oil and gas companies in Malaysia currently have developed their sustainability governance structure to ensure the implementatioan of sustainable business strategies and practices. 

“OGSE companies in Sarawak should tap these, particularly (with the availability of) OGSE development grants, export promotion, and human capital development. At the same time, (they should) practise the highest level of health, safety and environment standards by incorporating environment, social and governance (ESG) standards,” he said in his closing speech at the Sarawak OGSE Roadshow 2022 here today.

As Sarawak moves towards a low carbon future with renewable hydrogen and greater awareness about green issues, he emphasised the state’s commitment to maintain at least 60 per cent of its power generation capacity mix from renewable sources by 2030.

At the same roadshow, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Economy) Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed said Sarawak had shown that it is spearheading the country’s renewable energy agenda.

Mustapa said the establishment of the state’s Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability is testament to Sarawak’s commitment to balance economic growth and environmental sustainability. 

“Sarawak’s Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030) strongly emphasises environmental sustainability to achieve energy transition through opportunities in renewable energy,” he said. 

He said the PCDS 2030 is crucial for tackling climate change to achieve sustainable socio-economic development through the creation of new, high-value, income-generating opportunities. 

The event also witnessed the signing of an agreement between Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas), PTTEP HK Offshore Ltd, and Sarawak Shell Bhd for the Sarawak Integrated Sour Gas Evacuation System (SISGES) project, a significant milestone for Sarawak to ensure a sustainable gas supply for both the industry and the domestic market. 

Also present were Sarawak’s deputy minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, Petroleum Sarawak Bhd chairman Tan Sri Hamid Bugo, and Malaysia Petroleum Resources Corp chairman Datuk Dr Ahmad Suhaili Idrus.
