ECERDC projects to reinvigorate economic growth in Mersing, Johor

MERSING, Dec 8 — Various projects and initiatives are currently and would be implemented by the East Coast Economic Region Development Council (ECERDC) to reinvigorate economic growth in the Mersing region in Johor.
This includes the Jemaluang Dairy Valley (JDV) development and other agriculture projects that have garnered the full support of the Johor state government.
Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Hasni Mohammad who chaired the Johor ECER Implementation and Coordination Committee (ICC) meeting on Tuesday said the ECERDC development plan for the region is in line with the initiatives outlined in Johor Budget 2022.
This will support the state government’s objective to enhance food security and in the development of agro-food production, he said in a statement today.
JDV development, scheduled to begin this month involves an agreement of collaboration between the state government, ECERDC, Johor State Secretary (Inc) (SSI), where the appointment of a company to manage it will be finalised in June next year.
When fully operational, JDV is expected to produce 5.1 million litres of fresh milk and increase the nation’s dairy production by 11 per cent.
Meanwhile, ECERDC chief executive officer Baidzawi Che Mat said the council has implemented various other projects including the Tanjong Penyabong development that attracts tourists.
“The project received the ‘Special Commendation Government (Public Space) Placemaker Awards ASEAN’ from Nextdor Property Communications last month in recognition of the impact of the public space project meeting the needs of visitors.
Meanwhile, the Kampungstay project in Air Papan involving the construction of 10 chalets, multi-purpose halls, two restaurants as well as renovation of homes to encourage community-based tourism is expected to be completed in May next year,” Baidzawi said.
He said when completed, the project is expected to provide a spillover impact on the economy for the local community while generating income for homeowners by providing the Kampungstay experience and tourism-related services besides guided visits.
Another ongoing project is the PETA Rainforest Discovery Centre in Endau-Rompin (Johor) National Park will be completed in April 2023.
The new tourist attraction is expected to create employment opportunities in the tourism industry for the local community, especially the Orang Asli in the area, Baidzawi said.
In addition, the Endau-Mersing Fish Processing Park, which provides a platform to micro, small and medium enterprises in producing fish-based downstream products, is currently under construction and is 53 per cent completed.
