Penang to transform into green city to boost competitive edge

Penang aims to maintain its competitive edge in the industrial sector and thriving global economic hub by transforming into a green city.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the move would boost Penang’s attractiveness to high quality investors seeking a place to live, work and play.

“To be labelled as a green city, economic growth needs to be well rounded and resilient, capable of promoting net zero carbon emission growth while managing its natural resources and ensuring the livelihood of its citizen.

“By transitioning to a green economy, Penang will also increase its resilience against risks, including natural disasters and economic disruptions,” he said in his keynote address at the Renewable Energy Workshop: Journey to Net Zero Emission workshop here today.

Jointly organised by the Penang Development Corporation (PDC) and Tadau Energy, the one-day workshop provides a platform for industrial players to embrace the transition to a green economy and begin their journey towards a net zero carbon emission society.

Chow added that a successful transition to a green economy requires the collaboration of governments, businesses and industry leaders.

Meanwhile, PDC chief executive officer, Aziz Bakar said Penang has taken steps to implement sustainable development plans and create a low-carbon compact city over the last decade.

“We strongly believe that sustainable development is a vital component in forging our way forward in the post-pandemic era, and this workshop is the start of the journey to a more sustainable future,” he added.
