104,000 new jobs created in private sector for 4Q19

Up to 104,000 new jobs were created from 8.7 million jobs in the private sector in the fourth quarter of 2019 (4Q19) compared to 8.5 million in the previous corresponding period, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia.
“The number of jobs in the private sector rose 119,000 to register 8.7 million jobs. The rate of filled jobs was 97.7% while the vacancies rate was 2.3%, with the number of job vacancies recorded at 198,000,” chief statistician Datuk Seri Mohd Uzir Mahidin said in a statement yesterday.
From the overall jobs created last year, the skilled category comprised 43%, while semi-skilled represented 49.2%, he said.
According to the department, a total of 49.2% of the jobs created was in the services sector followed by construction (21.4%) and another 18.4% in the manufacturing sector.
“The number of jobs in the skilled category expanded by 19,000 to register 2.1 million jobs, with a share of 24.3%. Filled jobs made up 97.7% while vacancies rate was 2.3% with 48,000 in numbers,” Mohd Uzir added.
“In the meantime, jobs in the semi-skilled category rose 96,000 to 5.4 million jobs, representing 62.4% of the overall jobs. The rate of filled jobs in this category was 98% while the vacancies rate was 2%.”
For the low-skilled category, the department stated that jobs rose by 5,000 to record 1.2 million jobs, with a share of 13.3%. The rate of filled jobs was 96.4%, while the rate of vacancies was 3.6%.
Across the economic sectors, the department highlighted that 51.6% of jobs in the 4Q19 were concentrated in the services sector, followed by manufacturing (26.4%) and construction (15.4%).
The remaining were in agriculture (5.6%) and mining and quarrying (1%) sectors.
As for vacancies, 55.3% was in the manufacturing sector and 18.8% in the services sector.
The agriculture sector ranked third with a share of 14.3%, followed by construction (11.5%) and mining and quarrying (0.1%).
