FGVHoldings Bhd is targeting to produce 150,000 metric tonnes (MT) of palm-based animal feed products by 2024 as part of the plantation giant’s move to expand its animal feed and nutrition business.
FGV group CEO Datuk Haris Fadzilah Hassan said FGV’s expanded capacity will be able to contribute to about 60% of the local concentrate feed demand for ruminants in three years.
The group will allocate 75,000MT to make animal feed, which is 20% of their annual palm kernel expeller (PKE).
“Based on the ruminant statistics in Malaysia, the requirement of an animal feed concentrate is 240,000MT per year, in which FGV has already supplied 17% of this requirement last year to meet the demand of our local farmers,” he explained in a release yesterday.
Haris Fadzilah also mentioned there is an increase from only 8,000MT in 2018 to 39,000MT last year with a compound annual growth rate of 121% in 2020 regarding FGV’s domestic sales of PKE and animal feed products.
FGV’s subsidiary, FGV Integrated Farming Holdings Sdn Bhd, has launched ALMA, a high- quality animal feed brand, for FGV’s business expansion on animal feed and animal nutrition. The company and the Department of Veterinary Services Malaysia (DVS) collaborated in conjunction with the product launch to help animal farmers who were affected by the flood disasters in Selangor,
Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu. Not only does Malaysia’s East Coast consist of the highest number of livestock per capita in the country, but the region is also heavily affected by the recent flash floods disaster. A total of 800 ALMA animal feed bags (40MT) were contributed in stages to 300 farmers from Feb 22 until March 7 this year.
To mark ALMA animal feed deliveries to the designated locations, a flag-off event was held at DVS’ headquarters in Putrajaya and was officiated by DVS DG Datuk Dr Norlizan Mohd Noor.
The cargo was delivered to Pusat Sumber Genetik Ternakan in Ulu Lepar Gambang, Pahang; Pusat Veterinari Manir, Terengganu; and Pusat Veterinari in Kubang Kerian, Kelantan, with each location receiving 200 bags of ALMA animal feed products respectively.
“FGV will continuously support the local animal feed industry to remain self-sufficient. Our new range of ALMA animal feed pro- ducts are free of antibiotics and include healthy formulations for beef and dairy cattle feed, goat and sheep feed, chicken and native chicken feed, natural mineral feed and additional feed for livestock,” said Haris Fadzilah.
FGV has also established a distributorship programme so that the feed effectively reached local farmers throughout Peninsular Malaysia. The company will also be increasing the number of distributors this year.
ALMA animal feed products contain ingredients which are approved by the US Food and Drug Administration such as grains, minerals and vitamins, and do not contain prohibited waste materials from animals such as blood, bones or internal organs.
