The Sarawak Ministry of International Trade and Industry, Industry Terminal and Entrepreneur Development is planning to set up special units to facilitate the promotion and coordination of investments in the state.
Deputy minister Datuk Malcolm Mussen Lamoh said the existing investment committee under the ministry comprised of the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida), Department of Environment, Natural Resources and Environment Board Sarawak, Sarawak Energy Board and State Public Service Commission, among other state and federal agencies.
“The investment committees serve as a one-stop centre to coordinate and facilitate the requirement of investors and making sure investment activities can be carried out smoothly as planned,” he said in response to a question from Yussibnosh Balo (GPS-Tellian) in State Legislative Assembly sitting today.
With the setting up of special units or agencies under the ministry to facilitate investment promotion, Malcom stated their roles would be similar to that of Mida at the national level to provide greater focus in welcoming investment into the state .
Malcolm said his ministry would also act as a secretariat for the Industrial Coordination Committee (ICC) to consider all applications for industrial license in the state, pointing out over RM51.9 billion had been invested in the state’s manufacturing sector for the past five years.
On a separate matter, he said the government had no plans to set up a new industrial park in the Mukah division but such proposal could be considered if there is a high demand for it.
