PM: Malaysia-UAE to boost cooperation

04 Mar 2023

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have agreed to boost cooperation in various fields, including trade, investment, defence and energy.

Anwar, in a posting shared on his various social media platforms, said these were among the topics discussed during his telephone conversation with the UAE president, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

In the same social media postings, Anwar also shared a clip, nearly six minutes long, of his telephone conversation with the UAE president.

“You personally have been so helpful. In fact, at times, I feel so embarrassed. You have been helping with so many things, irrespective of trade and investment. You have been extremely kind.

“I have only been here (as the prime minister for three months) but almost every other week, the Emiratis (investors from the UAE) have been coming in (to Malaysia).

“Since the relationships (between Malaysia and the UAE) have been good, we must explore cooperation in the economy and defence as well as other various fields. There is a great future if we can explore this,” Anwar was heard saying in the clip.

Sheikh Mohamed concurred with Anwar when the former said the UAE is looking forward to building a stronger relationship with Malaysia.

“I fully agree with you. From now on, we have a clear path to building a stronger relationship. I also think the future between us is great.

“I grew up looking at Malaysia as a great Muslim country that makes a big difference in the world. And I am still learning a lot from you.

“I have a special place for your great country as well as your people in my heart,” said Sheikh Mohamed.

Anwar also took the opportunity to commend the UAE’s effort in assisting Malaysia with the humanitarian mission in Syria to help the earthquake victims.

“You have been so helpful and it would not have worked without your intervention. I look forward to visiting the UAE,” Anwar said.
