Tesla Inc is set to establish its Malaysian headquarters in Selangor later this year, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The announcement came after Anwar held a 25-minute virtual meeting today with Tesla’s founder and CEO, Elon Musk.
During the meeting, Anwar welcomed Musk’s readiness as well as interest shown by other companies to park their investment in Malaysia.
“I would like to also extend my congratulations and the support from the government in facilitating the opening of Tesla’s headquarters, service centre, as well as experience centre in Selangor this year,” the statement read.
The virtual meeting was attended by Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Aziz and Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil.
Anwar also highlighted the discussion of Starlink’s role in enhancing internet connectivity in Malaysia and the country’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions.
“Malaysia will continue to empower the country’s commitment to net-zero emission earliest by 2050. Malaysia has a plan and comprehensive ecosystem as well as competitive resources to support the clean energy industry, including electric mobility.”
The Prime Minister further mentioned the involvement of SpaceX’s subsidiary, Starlink, in the satellite broadband service, which will greatly improve internet connectivity, particularly in rural areas.
He emphasised that this service requires minimal physical infrastructure and land to achieve global internet connectivity.
Starlink is a division of SpaceX, the company led by Elon Musk.
Anwar participated in the virtual meeting from the Prime Minister’s Office in Putrajaya.
